AMOR MI FA CANTAR

OPENING LECTURE BY KRISTIAN HERBOLZHEIMER

AMOR MI FA CANTAR
INTACTVS
Efrén López, director

The opening concert of the festival is dedicated to love. Intactvs is a benchmark ensemble in the interpretation of medieval and Renaissance music. On this occasion he offers us a show of great beauty and intimacy that explores the different manifestations of the love for Italian music of the fourteenth century: from the deep spiritual devotion of the Marian laudos contained in the manuscripts of Cortona and Florence, to the courtly love of the ballads of Francesco Landini or the anonymous compositions of the Codex Rossi. A love that is expressed through song and music, a sound mosaic that is completed with some instrumental dances full of virtuosity and with a bridge in the Mediterranean with seaweed pieces from other contemporary musical traditions.

PYTHIA

ENSEMBLE IRINI
Lila Hajosi, conductor

The Ensemble Irini is one of the most promising young vocal ensembles in France. The quality of their performances have earned them awards and accolades and their concert activity takes them to the most important festivals and stages in Europe. The concert they are presenting at the Jordi Savall Festival is an unprecedented project that receives the support of the EFFEA program for emerging artists. Pythia wants to be a bridge between heaven and earth, between the mythological figure and the Virgin. Through this program, which mirrors the figure of the woman who receives the divine in the West and in the East, the Ensemble Irini explores these mystical spaces with the Prophecies of the Sibyllines by the composer Orlando di Lassus and Byzantine pieces dedicated to the Virgin. A meditative and spiritual concert in the Church of Santes Creus on the day of Santa Maria.

Jordi Savall, conductor

Jordi Savall returns at the helm of the orchestra Les Musiciennes du Concert des Nations to perform several Baroque concertos by leading European composers such as Vivaldi, Bach, Handel, Corelli, Avison and Geminiani. A celebratory concert that wants to pay tribute to the extraordinary performers of the Ospedale della Pietà, who, thanks to their talent and also to the mastery and unstable creativity of Vivaldi, have marked the history of music. They were mostly young and often prodigiously gifted, but also bruised in their existence by a painful personal history, these young women were, better than anyone else, able to express their sensitivity. Now the performers of Les Musiciennes du Concert des Nations will make us vibrate again listening to an attractive selection of Concerti Grossi and Follies outside the Royal Monastery of Santes Creus!

MAURICE RAVEL (1875-1937)
INSPIRACIONES & METAMORFOSIS

LE CONCERT DES NATIONS
Jordi Savall, viola de gamba & direction

Jordi Savall, conducting Le Concert des Nations, is confronted for the first time with the interpretation of the work of Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) and the music that inspired him. Ravel was one of the most influential figures in French music of his time and the main representative of impressionist music of the early 20th century, developing a unique musical style that combines virtuosity, refinement and harmonic richness. Its geographical proximity to the Basque Country and Spain inspired their entire repertoire and this concert aims to be a tribute to their roots and inspirations. In this concert Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations will make you discover an original program where you can listen to Sephardic and Hebrew, Iberian, Baroque, Greek and French melodies, by composers such as Joan Cabanilles, Lully, Antonio Martín y Coll, Santiago de Murcia, François Couperin, Marin Marais…, and, of course, some works by the composer Maurice Ravel himself!

MOZART I EBERL A VIENA
1786-1807

CONCERTO MADRIGALESCO
Luca Guglielmi, pianoforte & conductor
David Glidden, viola I, Núria Pujolràs, viola II
Candela Gómez, cello
Francesco Spendolini clarinet

We propose a journey to the Viennese music choir, a dialogue between the work of W.A. Mozart and his pupil A. Eberl with the performance of several sonatas and quintets and by the extraordinary ensemble Concerto Madrigalesco, conducted by the renowned Luca Guiglielmi.

Eberl, a great composer unjustly forgotten, was a direct pupil of Mozart himself. His music was published under his teacher’s name after 1791, due to the financial necessity of Mozart’s widow, Constanze. In addition, Eberl wrote a Symphony in E flat, premiered on the same night as Beethoven’s Eroica! The critics of the time considered A.Eberl superior to the chaotic Beethoven…! In this program, we present a confrontation between teacher and student through the peculiar color of the clarinet and viola, accompanied by the sweet sound of the fortepiano!

HESPÈRION XXI
Jordi Savall, viola de gamba soprano & conductor

This is, without a doubt, one of the most special concerts of the festival and it has the participation of musicians from all over the world! Without renouncing the philological rigour that underpins his interpretations, Jordi Savall presents in this concert one of his specialities: cultural dialogues through music. In this case, a swarm of Christmas pieces from conquered African-American territories, on the fringes of fire and blood. Here it is music that culturally connects territories such as Cuba, Haiti, the United States, Venezuela or Mali. The Caribbean, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean united under the same harmony, to establish a fascinating sound dialogue.
