HESPÈRION XXI
Jordi Savall, medieval viola & direction

What was music like in the time of Marco Polo? Embark on a fascinating musical journey from East to West, following in the footsteps of one of history’s most legendary explorers.
Jordi Savall, Hespèrion XXI, and the performers of Orpheus 21 commemorate the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s death with this exceptional concert. While in the 2024 edition of the Festival we explored the first part of his journey, from 1254 to 1276, this year we continue his journey until 1298, the year he was imprisoned during the Battle of Curzola in the Adriatic. During his captivity, he dictated his memoirs, which would become the Book of Marvels, a fundamental work that still fascinates today.
This extraordinary concert allows us to listen to the sounds and music that Marco Polo discovered during his maritime journey, from China to Europe, traversing Eastern, Indian, and Persian cultures. A sound journey that becomes a bridge between civilizations, where each melody speaks of encounters, exchanges, and discoveries.
From a historical perspective, Jordi Savall and the participating musicians offer us a unique and colorful program, revealing the musical richness of each region and the surprising diversity of instruments of the time. A concert to travel back in time and immerse oneself in the exotic world of Marco Polo, beautifully interpreted under the direction of Maestro Jordi Savall! A true anthem to diversity and intercultural dialogue through music.

ALTRE FOLLIE

The Art of Variation and Improvisation

HESPÈRION XXI

Josep Maria Martí, guitar
Andrew Lawrence-King, Spanish baroque harp
Xavier Puertas, violone
David Mayoral, percussion
Jordi Savall, soprano viola da gamba & direction

We present one of Jordi Savall’s most renowned and characteristic repertoires: the interpretation of the Folía!
The Folía is a dance of Portuguese origin that, between the 15th and 17th centuries, evolved from a popular dance associated with shepherds and peasants to an essential piece in the most solemn ceremonies of the European nobility. Over time, it spread across the continent and, thanks to Spanish and Portuguese galleons, crossed the ocean to blend with overseas music. In return, rhythms such as the jácaras, guarachas, and the canario inspired European composers, enriching the baroque repertoire.
In this unique concert, Jordi Savall, Andrew Lawrence-King, Xavier Díaz-Latorre, and David Mayoral, from the Hespèrion XXI ensemble, will transport us through a century of music filled with variations and improvisations. We will hear ancient folías by Diego Ortiz, the innovative guitar of Gaspar Sanz, the vibrant fandango by Santiago de Murcia, and the lively jarabe loco by Antonio Valente.
A vibrant concert, performed outdoors in the setting of the Royal Monastery of Santes Creus, full of virtuosity and emotion, to savor all the beauty and richness of dance and the Folía!

CHIAROSCURO

Iberian music for 4 violas da gamba

RICERCAR CONSORT

Philippe Pierlot, direction

Francisco Correa de Arauxo is one of the great names in Sevillian music and one of the most innovative organists and composers of the Iberian Baroque Correa de Arauxo’s work, written exclusively for keyboard, stands out for its rhythmic complexity, visionary style, and fascinating ornamentation. But what if his music had gone beyond the organ?
The prestigious gambist Philippe Pierlot takes on this challenge and brings Correa de Arauxo’s sonic universe into the fascinating world of the consort of viols. With this new interpretation, his music gains unexpected depth, full of contrast, chiaroscuro, and emotion, establishing a surprising dialogue between tradition and reinvention.
This spirit of research and reinterpretation is precisely what defines the Ricercar Consort, which since its foundation in 1980 has passionately explored the Baroque repertoire. From Bach to the rich heritage of the 17th century, the ensemble—under Pierlot’s direction—continues to move and inspire audiences through its innovative approach and interpretive sensitivity.
This concert, part of a festival that celebrates musical and cultural diversity, invites us to rediscover Correa de Arauxo from a new perspective, combining historical rigor with evocative interpretation. A unique experience to enjoy the richness of early music with fresh eyes.
